Teaching Financial Literacy at Bay Pines Center

DCCU strives to teach youth the importance of good money management skills at Bay Pines Youth Detention Center.  Matt Wiles, of Bay Pines, approached DCCU to come in every eight weeks to teach a new group of nine teenagers about finances. The teens wanted to learn everything from the difference between a credit union and a bank to how to build their credit. With hands raised and questions brewing, topics covered included: Credit v. Debit v. Prepaid cards, who can join a credit union, credit reports, loans, debt to income ratio, direct deposit, how to write a check and balance a checkbook, savings bonds, certificates of deposit, personal checks, money orders, cashier’s checks, and the importance of budgeting.
