Adulting is hard. It really is, if you’re not prepared for life in the real world after high school.
That’s why your area credit unions and some awesome local businesses have teamed up yet again to provide high school students at Escanaba Area Public Schools a unique, hands-on learning experience called a Financial Reality Fair. This fun & fast-paced activity makes a lasting impact & improves the financial understanding of teens as they prepare for successful independent living after high school.
Financial Reality Fairs allow teens to find out for themselves, that the choices they make will affect their financial future. Each participating student receives a budget worksheet, customized with a realistic starting annual salary & student loan debt, appropriate to the career they chose. Everyone is assigned a credit score, which determines the interest rates each student will pay on their loans & credit cards.
Students then visit several booths, operated by credit union & community volunteers to make decisions on the monthly expenses they will face when living on their own. The object is to find a place to live, purchase furniture, transportation & services to support themselves for one month in the real world. The students must figure out how to balance their budget & support a savings goal.
It they don’t make ends meet they must look at options such as obtaining a part-time job, finding a roommate, cancelling a service or revising their spending choices. They must review their final budget with a Financial Counselor as many times as necessary, until they make enough money for their monthly expenses, actually have money saved & are not too far in debt.
